Preface

Education is the foundation of human development and social progress. It plays a vital role in shaping the personality of individuals, developing moral values, fostering critical thinking, and preparing citizens for responsible participation in society. The study of the Principles of Education provides a comprehensive understanding of the nature, aims, functions, and various dimensions of education, which are essential for students, teachers, and educational practitioners. This book, "Principles of Education," has been carefully prepared to meet the requirements of undergraduate students studying education as a discipline. The contents have been organized systematically into four units covering the fundamental concepts of education, factors influencing education, agencies of education, and child-centric approaches to teaching and learning. Special emphasis has been given to presenting the topics in a simple, clear, and student-friendly manner while maintaining academic depth and accuracy. Unit I introduces the basic concepts of education, including its meaning, definitions, nature, scope, functions, principles, and aims. It also discusses education as a process and product, as well as education as both a science and an art. Unit II focuses on the factors of education, such as curriculum, co-curricular activities, educational institutions, heredity and environment, and the role of teachers. Unit III examines the major agencies of education, namely home, school, state, and mass media, highlighting their characteristics and educational significance. Unit IV explores child-centric education, including Kindergarten and Montessori systems, the Project Method, and the Play-way approach, which have significantly influenced modern educational practices. Every effort has been made to consult reliable and relevant sources during the preparation of this book. Great care has been taken to maintain originality in the presentation and interpretation of the subject matter. According to the iThenticate plagiarism report, the manuscript has achieved 1% Overall Similarity (Submission ID: trn:oid:3117:594138123; Submission Date: May 24, 2026, 9:41 AM GMT+5:30). The report was generated after filtering small matches of less than 10 words and internet sources, thereby confirming the originality and authenticity of the work.  The primary objective of this book is not merely to help students succeed in examinations but also to encourage a deeper understanding of educational principles and their practical applications. It is hoped that this book will serve as a valuable academic resource for students, teachers, researchers, and all those interested in the field of education. Despite sincere efforts, some shortcomings may still remain. Constructive suggestions and criticisms from readers and scholars will be warmly welcomed and gratefully acknowledged for the improvement of future editions.
