Paper Title: An Overview of the Development of Painting in Jharkhand in the Modern Perspective
Author:
Abstract:
It is difficult to determine exactly when tribal painting originated and developed in the state of Jharkhand. However, on the basis of evidence obtained from various rock shelters and mural paintings found in different regions of the state, its history is linked to the prehistoric period. The examples of paintings found throughout Jharkhand reveal a unique love for nature and clearly reflect the concept of environmental conservation, which holds great significance in the contemporary world.
The ancient painting traditions of Jharkhand include Jadopatia, Sohrai, and Kohbar styles. Unfortunately, these traditional art forms are now on the verge of disappearance. Unlike the painting traditions of several other Indian states, the artistic heritage of Jharkhand has not received adequate recognition. Since its separation from Bihar and emergence as an independent state, Jharkhand has gradually been successful in asserting and highlighting its unique cultural identity.
There is an urgent need for various institutions and government agencies to preserve and protect these traditional painting forms. The present research paper attempts to examine the significance of Jharkhand’s painting traditions and relate them to contemporary artistic and cultural contexts.
