Paper Title: PUBLIC RELATIONS PROCESSES OF THE BUDDHIST MONASTERIES IN KOLKATA
Author:
Abstract:
The city of Kolkata is widely known as the 'City of Joy,' where people of diverse religions, ethnicities, and cultures coexist. The city is home to numerous Theravada and Mahayana Buddhist monasteries. When speaking of Theravada monasteries in Kolkata, the ‘Sri Dharmarajika Chetiya Vihara’ (established in 1881) is the first to come to mind; similarly, the ‘Nipponzan Myohoji or Japanese Buddhist Temple’ (established between 1930 and 1935) is the foremost name associated with Mahayana monasteries in the city. Beyond propagating the teachings and philosophy of the Buddha and preserving their own traditions and culture, these monasteries engage in various social and cultural activities. Public relations plays a vital role in these endeavours, with the government and the media fulfilling significant functions in facilitating this outreach.
