Abstract:

Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) play a crucial role in community-based disaster management by acting as the first line of governance at the grassroots level. Their proximity to local communities enables them to identify vulnerabilities, mobilize resources, and coordinate disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation activities effectively. In the context of increasing climate-related disasters and environmental uncertainties, PRIs contribute significantly tostrengthening local resilience through participatory planning, risk assessment, public awareness, and sustainable development initiatives. They facilitate community engagement, ensure the inclusion of marginalized groups, and support the implementation of disaster management policies at the village level. Furthermore, PRIs collaborate with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and local stakeholders to build disaster-resilient communities. By integrating disaster risk reduction strategies into local development plans, PRIs promote sustainable and inclusive growth. Strengthening the capacity and resources of these institutions is essential for enhancing community resilience and ensuring long-term disaster preparedness and sustainable development.
